West Corporation
One of the many commercial office projects designed by Nielsen-Baumert Engineering, Inc. is the West Corporation Office Building and Parking Garage recently constructed in Omaha, Nebraska.  The office building has 156,000 square feet of floor space.  The adjacent parking structure has 272,000 square feet of floor space on 4 levels.
The Office Building is a five story steel structure with composite steel floor beams supporting concrete topped metal deck.  Steel beams and metal decking support the roof loads.  An intruded-mortar pile foundation system was utilized at this site.  The lower level floor is slab-on-grade.
The Parking Garage is constructed with precast concrete shearwalls, columns, and double-tees.  The parking surface is a cast-in-place concrete topping over the double-tee system.
Commercial Federal Headquarters
Nielsen-Baumert Engineering, Inc. recently completed the structural engineering for the first two phases of the Commercial Federal Bank Headquarters campus.
Phase 1 included 94,000 square feet of office space on 3 levels and a three level, 350-car parking garage.  The Phase 2 office building has three levels, with 125,000 square feet of office space.  The attached garage for the second phase will hold 400 cars on three levels.  The construction costs for the first and second phases are estimated at $19 million and $22 million, respectively.
The office buildings are steel framed utilizing long span bays to allow for large open office layouts.  The parking garages are long-span,  cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete structures.  Augered, cast-in-place piling foundations are utilized for all the structures.
Level 3 Communications
In 1998, Nielsen-Baumert Engineering, Inc. completed the structural engineering for the Level 3 Communications headquarters along the Rocky Mountain foothills outside of Denver, Colorado.  The headquarters is divided into two campuses.  The Interlocken campus includes 4 office buildings with a total of 860,000 square feet of space.  The nearby West campus has an additional 360,000 square feet of office space in two buildings.
The structures all utilized precast concrete for the floors, walls, columns and exterior face.  The floors are supported with double-tee precast units spanning 64 feet to achieve a column free office space.  The structural design included a deep foundation system and a structural floor system on the lowest levels due to the highly expansive soils in the area.
Parking Garage Projects
In addition to the West Corporation garage shown to the left, Nielsen-Baumert Engineering, Inc. has performed structural engineering consulting services on various other parking structures. They include the 630 stall Phase I and the 700 stall Phase II garages for the Commercial Federal Bank headquarters complex in Omaha which utilized post-tensioned concrete beams and slab; the 270 stall Bergan Mercy Medical Building garage utilizing pre-topped, precast concrete double tee's; and two steel framed, posttensioned concrete slab garages, with a combined total of 1100 stalls, for Creighton University.
Additionally, Nielsen-Baumert has been involved in the rehabilitation of various deteriorated parking structures, including garages for the Omaha World-Herald, The Doctor's Building and Commercial Federal Tower, all in Omaha, NE.
